Training location: Santa Fe Sheriffs Office, 35 Camino Justicia, Santa Fe, NM 87508
Time: 8:00am to 4:00pm (This course offers 21 In Service Training Hours with Certificate of Completion)
This course examines sexual crimes from legal, criminological, psychological, neurological, and investigative perspectives. Students will analyze statutory frameworks, offender typologies, victimology, forensic evidence, and investigative strategies. Emphasis is placed on ethical considerations, trauma informed practices, and evidence based policy responses.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Execute effective rapport building cognitive interviewing techniques that create trust between the investigator and the victim of a sexual crime.
- Illustrate how to improve the quality of victim’s statements during trauma informed interviews.
- Utilize advanced suspect interview tactics and techniques specifically designed for acquaintance based or alcohol facilitated sexual assault cases.
- Synthesize essential sex crime case law to guide investigative decision making and witness interviewing.
- Evaluate common reporting inconsistencies using evidence based interviewing techniques to differentiate between trauma induced memory gaps and intentional deception.
- Apply advanced forensic collection techniques that meet New Mexico statutory requirements for the admissibility of Sexual Assault Evidence Kits in criminal proceedings.
- Analyze injury patterns on sexual assault victims to correlate physical findings with the reported mechanism of assault and the use of force or incapacitation.
- Analyze and document suspect injuries to correlate physical findings with victim statements and defensive struggle patterns.
